Rural IT Quiz:2005 State Finals questions

 

Below are the questions and answers from The Rural IT Quiz held at Palace Grounds, Bangalore on 27/10/2005


ROUND 1: CHOOSE IT

The round provided nine subjects, from which the teams could choose one.

1) Logo: The question provided a photo of EA as in EA sports.

Answers like EA Sports and EA games were not accepted and then the young lady from Mandya

pocketed the first points with Electronic Arts.

2) Security: This security company is based in Santa Clara, California. Intrushield, Entercept and Foundstone are the famous brands. It was founded in 1987 and named for its founder John ______

McAfee

3) Personality: Photo

Answer was Anne Mulcachy, the Xerox Chief. This was the first question answered by the audience.

4) Long question: Basically name the venture started by Sanjeev Bhikchandani

The company was Infoage, which created Naukri.com

5) Company Logo: Worldwide leader in graphics and Digital Media Processors

6) What is ego surfing?

Searching for one’s own name and admiring the results

7) connect a fingerprint logo and a photo (of Rene Descartes)

ITTIAM: The logo is that of ITTIAM and Rene Descartes’ statement – I think therefore I am resulted in the christening of ITTIAM.

8) Photo of a chip. Importance?

Intel’s first ever chip- the C4004

 

ROUND 2:   .IN

Three clues per question. 15 on the first, 10 on the second and 5 on the third. Constant minus 10 for every wrong answer. The entire round was played on the buzzer.

The third picture in every question was the picture of a personality.

A: From Tamil Nadu, moved to Delhi in 1968. First employed in DCM

B: Nicknamed Magnus. His Singapore Company is called Far East Corporation.

Ans: Shiv Nadar. It was actually Nadar and seven of his friends, who pooled in their resources and quit DCM to set up HCL.

A: Started his business in the early 1970s with a bicycle company in Ludhiana.

B: Life changed after the Telecom Regulations Bill in 1992

Ans: Sunil Mittal, founder and chairman of Airtel



3)

A: Based in Vijayawada. Sent to US in 1975 to get an MBA from Ohio

B: He ventured into cotton spinning and construction. His company was incorporated in 1989.

4)

A: Born in 1962. Alumnus of BITS, Pilani. Earlier employed in GE

B: Left a high profile Indian Company to join the Texas Pacific Group

Ans: Cracked on the second clue: Vivek Paul

5)

A: Based from Karnataka. Got his degree from IIT, Mumbai (couldn’t get the rest)

B: From Jan 2002 to April 2003, he was the chief scientist at Lucent Technologies

C: Photo

Ans: Arun Netravali (Answered by the eighth standard girl!!!)


6)

A: Took over his company in 1969. (Couldn’t get the rest)

B: Father of Indian Software Industry. The F.C in his name stands for Faqir Chand

Ans: Faqir Chand Kohli (cracked on second clue)


ROUND 3: CROSS IT

It looks like the crosswords at The Crucible was a major success. Giri has incorporated this round in every quiz he does nowadays.


1) Program makes request through object request (din’t get it after that)

Ans: CORBA

2) Central hierarchical database in Windows 95 and NT used to store

Ans: Registry

3) Free standing computer or terminal that gives information to the public.

Ans: Kiosk

4) Copywrited software where one can try it before buying it.

Ans: Shareware

5) Developed as a proposed standard by Microsoft in mid 90s.

Ans: ActiveX

6) Developed by the US Department of Defense

Ans: ARPANET

 

ROUND 4: BEYOND THE OBVIOUS

To start things, this round was exclusively prepared for the Rural IT Quiz way back in 1999 for the TCS Rural IT quiz. That is exactly why it is named Beyond the Obvious- the motto of TCS.The round contains a set of clues- audio, video, pictures and text. One must think beyond the Obvious.

Visual Computing Lbs+ Engineering Creativity+ Minto fresh ad+ a song

Ans: Tata Elexsi: Engineering creativity being their adline and the ad being produced by a special software called Maya.


2)

Akebono+ The Entrepreneur behind the Entrepreneurs+ Two photos (with one being a chinky)+ kaal dhamaal song from kaal

Ans: Yahoo. Akebono is the server on ehich Yahoo was created. Yang and Filo called themselves the entrepreneur behind the entrepreneurs. The chinky was the one seen on the yahoo asia page and kaal song featured Malaika Arora who is the Indian face of Yahoo Mail.

Nascar Racing+ HALO 2+ Hulk+ Harry Potter

Ans: All games available on the Microsoft Xbox platform


4)

Sania+ Non Stop+ Shankar Mahdevan’s Breathless song

Ans: Tata Indicom. Sania is the brand endorser. Shankar Mahadevan’s song is used as a jingle which features sourav and irfan. Non stop is their latest plan which lets users receive incoming calls for two years without recharging.


5)

Compaq+ photo (Mark Hurd)+ Shrek+ Williams F1 Car

Ans: Hewlett Packard. Hp bought Compaq during the Fiorina period. Mark Hurd replaced Carly as CEO. Shrek 2 was made at the hp labs. Williams’ main sponsor is hp at the F1 circuit.


6) Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo+ Video from Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin+ Floppy picture+ Photo (Akio Morito)

Ans: Sony: It earlier name was Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo. Akio Morito being the founder. Jassi comes on Sony TV. Sony was the company to research and launch the Floppy first.

 

ROUND 5: ZIP IT

1) If G is Graphics, what does ONG stand for? Portable Network Graphics

2) Majesco, recently converted a 1970 film to a game which has been released in India recently. Which movie? Jaws

3) If IBM: OS2, who produces VMS? Hewlett Packard
